Daily Devotions

What is S.O.A.P.?

Our desire is that every believer would not just attend church, but also hear from God daily through prayer and His Word.

Why we journal

Re-pattern the way you think.

At Greater Church, our purpose is to build a healthy life-giving church. One of the ways we build health is by leading a devotional life with Jesus. Doing daily devotions re-patterns the way we think, transforms the spirit of our mind, and helps us become more like Jesus.

S.O.A.P. journaling is a simple and excellent way to both record and process what God has spoken to you. It's also a useful tool when you want to reflect on the gems you've received. Without writing them down, you may forget those blessings and important lessons. And while journaling is a very personal time with the Lord, sharing some of your daily journaling with your G-Group, family, friends or spouse can bring deeper insight and encourage others.

All you need is three items: a Bible, a pen, and a journal.

How to S.O.A.P.

Four letters. One habit.

S

Scripture

Open your Bible to your reading for the day. Take time reading and allow God to speak to you. When you're done, look for a verse that particularly spoke to you, and write it out in your journal.

O

Observation

What do you think God is saying to you in this scripture? Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and reveal it to you.

A

Application

Personalize what you have read by asking how it applies to your life right now. Instruction, encouragement, a new promise, or correction. Write how this scripture can apply to you today.

P

Prayer

Ask God to help you use this scripture, or pray for greater insight on what He may be revealing. Prayer is a two-way conversation, so be sure to listen. Now, write it out.

Example entry

January 1: "Close to Nothing"

Scripture: Genesis 1:2. "The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters."

Observation: There was nothing. The Earth was formless. Darkness covered everything. Yet God was near, hovering, close.

Application: As I stare at the year ahead, it may seem as if I have nothing. Here's the beauty of it: God is close to nothing. He's with me, seeing what it can be. I don't have nothing. I have God, and He's close to nothing.

Prayer: Father, may I be grateful. In what looks like nothing, may my faith increase as I see you near. May the dreams imagined become the realities that I consider good this year. In Jesus name, amen.
